There have been two changes to the Winter Games NZ schedule - please read official statements below:
Super G - Cancellation
There has been a change to the programme for the FIS Australia New Zealand Cup alpine ski racing programme that was scheduled to be held at Coronet Peak between the 27th of August and the 1st of September 2023.
New Zealand has had a challenging start to the 2023 winter season, with below average snowfall and above average temperatures meaning it is possible that we will be unable to build the high start for the Super G.
Without the high start the slope doesn't meet the vertical drop requirements for a Continental Cup Super G event. Given this risk, cost pressures and low preliminary entries we have chosen to cancel the Super G races scheduled on Sunday the 27th of August to focus our energy on delivering a great series of technical events as per the calendar.
The Giant Slalom and Slalom races will be held as scheduled and we look forward to seeing athletes and spectators alike at Coronet Peak for the FIS Australia New Zealand Cup Giant Slalom and Slalom races.
Halfpipe Junior World Championships - Cancellation
There has been a change to the programme for the 2023 FIS Park and Pipe Junior World Championships presented by La Roche Posay.
New Zealand has had a challenging start to the 2023 winter season, with below average snowfall and above average temperatures.
Winter Games NZ, together with FIS, has made the difficult decision to cancel the halfpipe event which was scheduled to take place at Cardrona Alpine Resort between the 4th and 8th of September.
The halfpipe takes one month to build and shape, and there is currently insufficient snow for our partners at Cardrona Alpine Resort to build a world class halfpipe.
We are confident that the Slopestyle and Big Air events will be held as per the schedule, and we look forward to seeing athletes and spectators at Cardrona Alpine Resort for these events.
